About the Photographer

You are a natural. You capture souls, not pictures.  Anyone can take pictures of beautiful people, but it takes an artist to capture everyday people and express emotion and depth and love and affection as you did in the portraits of my parents. They are beautiful lasting memories that we can treasure for a lifetime! Thank you!

Your photographs really captured the essence of my knitwear designs. The market response has been overwhelmingly positive.  I am already looking forward to working with you on my next project.

For studio owner and photographic artist David A. Gilmour, Lumacraft Photography is the culmination of his half century of learning, exploration, and experience.

“When I was a kid, I was forever sketching, cartooning and painting. I still have boxes filled with my old sketchbooks,” David recalled. "All the while though, I was equally fascinated with science and technology."

After earning a B.Sc.(Hons.) from McMaster University in 1982, David embarked on what became a 22 year career in the microelectronics industry. “My first assignments were engineering jobs. I migrated into production management, and eventually into marketing,” David explained. “The creative side of me was still present, and I seemed to gravitate toward roles that gave me opportunities to apply it.”

David’s career in microelectronics involved extensive travel in Europe, Asia, and North America. He was able to spend his idle time in some of world’s great art museums, including the Louvre, the Rijksmuseum, and the Metropolitan. Of his visit to the Vatican, David said, “I still regard the half hour that I spent wondering at the heartbreakingly beautiful perfection of Michelango’s Pieta as among the most profoundly moving experiences of my life.”

The successes that he enjoyed in his first career enabled David to fund the launch of his photography business in 2004. “As soon as I picked up my first digital camera in 1994, I was hooked. I realized that digital photography was the ideal convergence of my artistic and technical interests. Beyond that, my years of industrial experience in marketing and management gave me confidence that I could convert my passion for digital photography into a successful business.”

My clients often express surprise when they see how hard that I sweat the little details of my lighting setups, or how excited that I get in those moments when all our efforts come together just right as the shutter snaps, to produce their perfect portrait.

- David A. Gilmour

Owner and Photographic Artist, Lumacraft Photography

David remains mindful of the journey that led to his second career operating Lumacraft Photography studio. “I never lose sight of how lucky I am to be doing what I love for a living. I wake up every morning enthused about the day’s projects. With every commission, I aim to produce the very best image for my client that I possibly can. My clients often express surprise when they see how hard that I sweat the little details of my lighting setups, or how excited that I get in those moments when all our efforts come together just right as the shutter snaps, to produce their perfect portrait. I believe that they are simply not used to seeing someone care so deeply about the job that they’re doing.”

A skilled technician, David knows that it takes a lot more than passionate enthusiasm to produce a great photograph. “One thing that I truly love about photography is that there is always more to learn. Over the past decade, I have completed dozens of professional photography workshops, taught by some of the world’s finest photographers. And every year I seek out new learning opportunities.” A measure of David’s skill level is the success that he has had teaching both professional and amateur photographers at the workshops that he runs at his studio. Another measure is the series of awards that his images have won in various professional competitions.

David is an active member of the local business community and is a founding member of Burlington Business Connections, a nonprofit association of local small business owners.

Commissioning a photograph is an act of trust. You trust that your photographer will apply his creativity and skill to produce an original image that meets your expectations, is technically excellent, is artistically pleasing, and tells the story that you wanted to be told, for all time. David A. Gilmour has worked his whole life to become the photographer who is uniquely worthy of your trust, and uniquely able to deliver on it. Let him demonstrate that to you, by giving him a call to discuss your photography needs.

David, I just love the way the photos turned out! My family and friends are all so impressed. I'm actually considering doing some modeling now as a result! I had such a fun time doing all the different pin-up shots, I felt totally comfortable and I think the results are amazing. Thanks so much for all of your hard work in making the shoot so successful. I have been recommending you to everyone I know!

A. and I are totally in love with our wedding pictures! You were able to capture all of our favorite memories from the wedding, and really tell a story for us :) We love the blown up picture we have now placed in our bedroom, with signatures from guests from our wedding surrounding it! We also want to thank you for trucking it outside in the freezing winter snow storm for our engagement pictures. We are so grateful and would recommend you to anyone! We were most pleased with the down to earth, friend like approach you take to your clients.
